“We create images. We draw what we perceive, what we see and hear, but also what remains hidden. We use drawing to engage with the people around us. The horrendous assault by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the appalling suffering caused by the ongoing Israeli military attacks on the Gaza Strip has been overwhelming. Hearing that Jewish people in Germany feel isolated and threatened, that they once again experience increased fear for being Jewish, profoundly disturbs us. Simultaneously, we are horrified to witness a rise in Islamophobia and racial discriminations. Right-wing extremism, hatred, and incitement to violence are becoming more visible and tangible, yet speechlessness often prevails. At the beginning of the year, Hannah Brinkmann, Nathalie Frank, Michael Jordan, Moritz Stetter, Birgit Weyhe and Barbara Yelin, accompanied by Véronique Sina and the Erlangen Cultural Office, launched the project "Wie geht es dir? Illustrators against anti-Semitism, hatred and racism". In dialogue with those affected, illustrators tell short stories that are published weekly at www.wiegehtesdir-comics.de and on Instagram @comics_wiegehtesdir. "It is very important to us not to reinforce existing rifts. Instead, we want to use this project to raise awareness, promote understanding and empathy and to learn for ourselves."
