Lecture by Myriam Macé (Bremen)

In this presentation, we examine how Isabelle Maroger grapples with her family's involvement in Nazi racial ideology, shedding light on a lesser-known part of German history. When Isabelle is enthusiastically complimented on the blond hair and blue eyes of her newborn baby in the tram — a rarity nowadays — she is shocked. For a long time, she was proud of her heritage, as her paternal grandparents fought in the French Resistance against the Nazi regime. However, she then learns where exactly her mother was born in Norway: in a Lebensborn clinic. Such maternity clinics were established by the Nazis across Europe to increase the birth rate of "Aryan" children.

Moderation: Clemens Heydenreich
