Detlef Surrey is a freelance illustrator and comic book artist based in Berlin. His clients include agencies, publishers and social organisations such as the German Bundestag and Amnesty International. Surrey studied visual communication at the HdK Berlin. His comic strip Emil appeared in the Berlin city magazine zitty from 1983-91. In 2007 Surrey designed Karlchen Adler, a figure of sympathy for children, for the German Bundestag. Detlef Surrey is a member of the Berufsverbands Illustratoren Organisation e. V. and has been on its board since 2018. He always carries a sketchbook with him because he loves to draw and use it to record what surrounds him - both when he travels and in his city of Berlin. He is an active member of the Urban Sketchers network.
