Martin tom Dieck
Martin tom Dieck was born in 1963 in Oldenburg. After completing his degree in illustration at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Hamburg (Technical University of Design, Hamburg), he published his first comic Der unschuldige Passagier (“The Innocent Passenger”) in 1993, which received the Max und Moritz prize at the International Comic Salon in 1994. Since then, he works on illustrations and comic strips, which are mainly published in German and French magazines such as Strapazin, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Libération, among others. Alongside this, he published longer works such as L’oud silencieux (L’Association 1996), Hundert Ansichten der Speicherstadt (Arrache Cœur 1997) und Salut, Deleuze! (Arrache Cœur 2000). In the year 2000, he was awarded the Max und Moritz prize for best German comic artist. In 2005, he was awarded the Prix de l’école supérieure de l’image at the International Comic Festival in Angoulême. After some time as a professor at the HAW Hamburg and the Muthesisus Kunsthochschule Kiel (Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design), in 2009, he joined the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen as a professor of illustration.
