Sultanas Traum (ES/DE 2023)

On rummaging through a bookstore in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, the young Spanish artist Inés comes across the feminist novel “Sultanas Traum”. Together with Inés, the audience dive into the utopian reality of the book: “Sultanas Traum” tells the story of Ladyland, a world where men are only allowed to operate within the domestic sphere because of a war. Women leave their houses, are part of the public sphere, and participate in politics and the economy. The book envisions a future where women live freely and without fear since men do not have the power to harass or threaten them. The story “Sultanas Traum” was first published in 1905 by the Bengali activist and writer Rokeya Sakhawat Hussain.
